Crowley and Me

Posted in Book Links tagged , , , , at 2:36 pm by dpcoffey

As I’ve stated before in these “pages”, I’ve been reading John Crowley quite a bit lately. Little Big (read in July/August 2007) is what started me off, and, after several false starts, I dove deep this past July into his monolithic “AEgypt” series. I read three of the four books on vacation and started the fourth when I returned home. Because I was back in the real world of duties and commitments, I naturally felt less of an urgency to finish the final book, Endless Things. In fact, the further I got into the book, the more I began dreading finishing it, but not in the way one normally dreads the impending conclusion of an extraordinary novel. This dread was borne of an irrational fear that when it ended, something in my life would end too; somehow, a fire would be extinguished.

“AEgypt”, to me, is nothing less than a sign, or series of signs, the meaning of which my soul, or unconscious, or little guy at the psychic helm, has understood right along. One of the things that Crowley’s main character, the anti-hero Pierce Moffett finally comes to realize is that, contrary to the hero-myth trope where the treasure that the hero seeks is finally understood to be the journey itself, his particular circumstances are such that the only way to obtain what he has been searching for – his own Philosopher’s Stone – is to not get it, to let it go. This paradox is what I’ve been feeling while coming close to the final 200 pages of Crowley’s series. So, I’ve stopped. I’ve no doubt that I will pick it up again someday, ideally in my old age (that just somehow seems right), and finish it. When the little guy tells me it’s time.

Like the coins on the ground that one finds with surprising frequency once one makes a concerted effort to keep an eye out for them, I’ve been finding extensions and examples of the many ideas with which Crowley has infused the “AEgypt” series in some pretty unlikely places. I’ll delve into a few of these in the next PftB entries.

Leaving Talking Leaves (Buffalo in July)

Posted in Book Links tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 6:35 pm by dpcoffey

What was going to be a somewhat current state-of-the-vacation post is now a plunge into recent memory. I wanted to mention some particulars of our journey from southern Ontario into Buffalo, NY. We had our ritual once-a-year breakfast of Shawarma & eggs at Amy’s Place, on Main Street in North Buffalo, and then walked a few blocks down the street to Talking Leaves Books, one of the best independent bookstores in Western NY, especially if you happen to be into contemporary poetry. I came away from Talking Leaves with a very rare copy of a literary journal called The Acre, edited by Michael Casey. The issue that I was lucky enough to find (#10, published in 2000) included a suite of poems by recent US Poet Laureate Ted Kooser that I don’t believe have been published elsewhere, although I haven’t yet researched this claim. It also includes a poem by a former creative writing professor of mine, and highly-regarded poet, Irving Feldman. According to WorldCat, only one library owns The Acre (and only this issue) — SUNY Buffalo’s Poetry Collection of course. I will be adding my copy to the Iowa State University Library’s Special Collections Department.

Also picked up: Ron Padgett’s The Big Something (The Figures, 1990), Susan M. Schultz’s Addenda (Meow Press, 1998), and Laird Hunt’s Dear Sweetheart (Jensen/Daniels, 1999). Almost got, but ultimately passed on: Visions of a Daughter, Foretold (Kenosha, WI; Light & Dust Books, 1994) by Jessica Hagedorn and her daughter, Paloma Hagedorn Woo. Next time. Copies of that book have been on the chapbook rack for years, I’m sure they’ll still be there next summer.

I will be commenting on the three purchased books mentioned above very soon in these “pages”. Mainly I wanted to plug Talking Leaves, which has been a direct and indirect source of inspiration for me since coming to Buffalo as an undergraduate in 1990. I still remember the first book I bought there: Anne Waldman’s Helping the Dreamer (Coffee House Press, 1989). Unfortunately, I did not get downtown to visit Rust Belt Books, which deserves every bit as much press and praise as Talking Leaves.

Ghost Waitress!

GHOST WAITRESS

(my idea for a new “dramedy”)

Synopsis for pilot/series: Young waitress dies in diner before she is able to master her vocation; in fact, she dies doing something that only a bad waitress would do. She becomes a wandering spirit, showing up at a new eatery every episode, from truckstop diners to four-star establishments. In each case, there is a wait staff person in need of help in mastering their job duties. Also, it becomes apparent that there is a murder to be solved each week as well. These two things are usually not related unless it’s sweeps week or the season finale. Gradually we learn that someone who was present the night of the waitress’ death has been following her. Also, in season 2 there’s the possible addition of an evil and insane sous chef spirit who tries to thwart Ghost Waitress’ every move. My main casting idea for the character of the Ghost Waitress would be Miranda “Sex Garden” July, but I am open to alternatives.

Main theme song would ideally be Jane Siberry’s “Waitress”, but it would have to be remixed, to be a little more subdued, a little more 21C.
